The Gateway to Hokkaido<\/h3>\n
Muroran, 130km south of Sapporo, overlooks the\u00a0Uchiura Bay<\/strong>\u00a0and is surrounded by mountains. It\u2019s the access point for the island of\u00a0Hokkaido<\/strong>\u00a0and its capital. With a population of nearly two million, Hokkaid\u014d\u2019s vibrant capital\u00a0Sapporo<\/strong>\u00a0is the fifth-largest city in Japan.
\nIt\u2019s worth lingering, as the city is generously endowed with parks and gardens. The mountains that attract skiers and snowboarders rise up to its south, and the dramatic coastline around the\u00a0Shakotan<\/strong>Peninsula<\/strong>\u00a0is less than thirty minutes away. Sapporo is also synonymous with its beer, which has been brewed here since 1891; a visit to the handsome, late nineteenth-century\u00a0Sapporo Beer<\/strong>\u00a0Museum and\u00a0Bier Garten<\/strong>\u00a0is a must, as is a stroll through the grounds and museums of the\u00a0Hokkaid\u014d<\/strong>\u00a0University Botanical Gardens, which date from the same era.
\nFollow the picturesque coastal road around\u00a0Uchiura Bay<\/strong>\u00a0from Muroran and you\u2019ll reach the eastern side of the\u00a0Shikotsu-T\u014dya<\/strong>\u00a0National Park, one of Hokkaid\u014d\u2019s prettiest lakeland and mountain areas, but also the most developed, thanks to its proximity to Sapporo. two main caldera lakes \u2013\u00a0T\u014dya-ko<\/strong>\u00a0to the west and\u00a0Shikotsu-ko<\/strong>\u00a0to the east \u2013 are active volcanoes and surrounded by excellent hiking trails.
\nBetween the two lakes lies\u00a0Noboribetsu Onsen<\/strong>, Hokkaid\u014d\u2019s largest hot-spring resort, worth visiting to soak up the otherworldly landscape of bubbling and steaming\u00a0Jigokudani<\/strong>\u00a0(Hell Valley).
\nPretty as the location is, the best reason for visiting T\u014dya-ko is to see the nearby active volcano Usu-zan, around 2km south, and its steaming \u201cparasite volcano<\/strong>\u201d Sh\u014dwa Shin-zan. You can also take a bus to the Nishiyama Crater Promenade, a 1.3km boardwalk across the recent break in the earth\u2019s crust that ends at an eerily abandoned elementary school.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
